What is nursing profession?

Nursing profession is a novel profession in which profession a nurse provides care of all ages person like patients, family, community people etc.

Nursing is considered as a profession because it fullfil all the criteria of a profession. A profession is defined as an occupation with ethical components, that is devoted to the promotion of humen and social welfare. Nursing is a profession because like a profession, nursing has its on body of knowledge based on social and scientific principles.

What is Code of Ethics for Nurses?

Code of ethics serves as a means of self Regulation and set the standard of individual Behaviour for the profession.  Professional code of ethics are a system of rules and principles for its members and adhere to the professional practice standards. 

The nurses code was first established by the International Council of Nurses Codes in 1953.  The ICN code of ethics for nurses, most recently revised in the year 2012.

Four principle elements of ICN code of ethics:
  1.  Nurses and people
  2.  Nurses and practice
  3.  Nurses and the profession
  4.  Nurses and co-workers

Fundamental responsibility of the nurse is in four areas namely, to promote health, to prevent illness, to restore health and to alleviate suffering.

Nursing Professional Value:

Professional values are the guiding beliefs and principles that influence work behaviour.

  •  Altruism: 

Selfless concern of nurses for the welding of patients and others.   For example  advocating for patients and mentoring other Health Care professionals.

  •  Autonomy:   

Right to self determination.  For example, nurses should respect patients’ rights to make decisions on their treatment. Plan of care in consultation with patients. 

  • Human dignity: 

Respect for the uniqueness of individuals/people.  For example cultural competent care to patients respecting patients privacy and maintaining confidentiality of patient information.

  • Social Justice: 

Acting in accordance with fair treatment regardless of economic status ethnicity, age, citizenship, disability or sexual orientation. For example facilitate Universal access to Healthcare and non discrimination in delivery of nursing care.



A nurse works in a very critical environment, so there should be leadership qualities in anurse. So there are many leadership theories in Nursing, detailed below:

Theories on Leadership:  

  • Trait Theory: Individuals with a certain trait or characteristic become leader.
  • Leadership style theory:  leadership style for most significant bases for effective leadership.
  • Trait and situational match theory:  When certain trait match with the particular situation leadership become most effective.
  • Leadership styles and situational theory:  When certain leadership styles match with perticular situation become effective.
  • Greatman theory: According to this, certain people are born with certain characteristics to become a leader.
  • Charismatic theory: People become leaders because they have charisma, because of this other people feels better in their presence and they will get emotional support and inspiration from the leaders.
  • Situational theory: different situation require different trait to become leaders. show a person who is leader at one situation may become follower at another situation.
  • Contigency theory: according to this leaders role depends upon 3 situation and are-(1)  leader-member  relation (2)  task structure and (3)  position power.
  • leader member relation means the faith and loyalty group members possessed towards the leader.
  •  task structure is said to be high if it’s easy to define and measure a task in terms of gold clarity, extent to which the decision can be verified,                             multiplicity  of gold path and simplicity of solution. If not then task structure is low.
  •  position power means the power which they are obtaining by sitting in a specific position or a chair.
  • Pathe Goal Theory: As for this leader facilitate the followers to accomplish goal by minimising the obstruction and rewarding them for the accomplishment of the task.

 Leadership Styles:

  • Autocratic Leadership: Leader has strong control over the group and takes decision.
  • Democratic leadership: Leader acts as a facilitor and encourage the group to take decision.
  • Laissez fare leadership: Leader participates minimally and acts as a resourse person or consultant.
  • Participative leadership: In this style functions are distributed among all the group members.

  • Democratic or participative leadership
  • Laissez fare leadership
  • Situational leadership
